Supporting Dorset Mind
Here at My Fitness Advisor we take mental health very seriously as we know how important it is to our overall wellbeing. Not only do we care about people being able to find the right fitness service to help them get physically fit but we also want to ensure that people are able to stay mentally fit too! Which is why we have teamed up with Dorset Mind, a pioneering local charity that educates, challenges mental health stigma and inequality, and promotes recovery by empowering individuals to develop resilience.
It’s become clear to many people over the past year that exercise can play a vital role in helping us sustain our mental well-being. At MFA we are committed to helping everyone look after their minds as well as their bodies, therefore, partnering with Dorset Mind and supporting their mission was a simple decision.
Physical and mental health go hand in hand
According to the NHS’ Every Mind Matters website, having good mental health helps us relax more, achieve more and enjoy our lives more. And we couldn’t agree more! Physical and mental health go hand in hand. Loads of the things you do for your body, like getting active or eating better, will boost your mental wellbeing too. Even a short burst of 10 minutes’ brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Plus doing regular exercise can boost our self-esteem and help to manage stress, anxiety and depression.
Exercise can also help to prevent the development of mental health problems and improve the quality of life of people experiencing mental health problems.
Dorset Mind – what they do
Dorset Mind The charity offers a range of individual and group interventions to support people on their personal recovery journey from an initial assessment onwards. Their support for adults includes active monitoring (CBT-type coaching), befriending, counselling, mentoring and a range of wellbeing support groups, which also cater for LGBT+, women-only, carers and minority communities. These all help people regain social skills and develop confidence.
The charity also delivers educational wellbeing programmes for schools and workplaces. In addition, their specialist training team offers a range of courses and packages that help employers and employees alike, including Mental Health First Aid.
Dorset Mind also provide volunteer opportunities across all areas of their organisation. To find out more about the charity, please follow this link: dorsetmind.uk
Dorset Mind and physical wellbeing
Dorset Mind, also recognises the importance of being physically active and that the link between physical health and mental health is extremely strong.
In 2019, Dorset Mind were successful in their application to run the Get Set to Go Programme until February 2021. The Get Set to Go Programme aimed to improve the lives of everyone with mental health problems in Dorset through access to sport and physical activity, with support from Sport England and the National Lottery.
They are looking to build on this programme going forward to create a legacy for physical activity and to develop further opportunities for Dorset residents to experience the benefits being physically active can bring to their overall wellbeing.
Giving our fundraising support
The last year has been difficult and challenging for all charities with so many organised fundraising events unable to go ahead – and this is no exception for Dorset Mind., who also witnessed an increase of up to 80% in referrals for their support. So, with their services needed now more than ever due to the effects the pandemic has had on everyone’s mental health, we plan to do some fundraising for them this year together with our fitness partners. Keep an eye out for details in the coming months and please try and support our efforts if you can.
